I had a new shelter I wanted to get some experience with in fairly mild conditions before a trip to the Desolation Wilderness in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains in two weeks.  I wanted something that would be snow free for the inaugural trip so I picked the Lost Creek Wilderness.  In the end I ran into more snow than expected on the second day but it worked out great overall.
I decided to do a loop around Windy Peak starting and finishing at the Rolling Creek TH.

This place is quickly becoming a favorite.

Getting a good pitch was a little trickier than I expected. Not having any stretch on the outer material meant that I really had to have the corners pitched to make a perfect rectrangle at the base.

Once again, shorts prove to be the best choice.

Did not expect to see this. At first, I thought they'd just blown in and got caught on a tree. It would be easy enough to pop the balloons and pack them out but upon closer inspection I noticed that they had obviously been tied to the branch on purpose. Since the balloons were full it seemed like it was recent. I'd passed another pair of footprints earlier so I figured these belonged to them (maybe so they wouldn't get lost?) and left them alone.

some really straight trail sections. Balloons were different. Shorts and snow.
