Granted I haven't spent much time in RMNP in the summer in ~7 years, winter seems like it might be the best time of year to visit. The crowds are much smaller (most facilities are actually closed) and the scenery is absolutely majestic. I liked the taste of winter camping I got as a kid and wanted to give backpacking in the snow a shot. After being turned back by Sky Pond almost exactly a month prior, I looked up backcountry campsites in the area and settled on 'Andrews Creek' between Loch Vale and Sky Pond. Trip Date: 2017 02Feb 04
It seems that I am not very good at picking the best day for my adventures. Three weeks in a row, whichever day of the weekend I choose for my winter adventures, it's better the other day. Even though it was surprisingly warm (near 32F in the park) it was very windy, snowy and overcast in the mountains. A trip up Loch Vale and Sky Pond had been on my list for several weeks now I and I decided to go for it. Trip Date: Jan 22, 2017
Saturday morning trip to RMNP to continue breaking in my new snowshoes in glacier gorge. I wasn't sure if I would make it all the way to Black Lake but even if I had to turn back at Mills Lake it would still be a good outing. Before getting started I took some pictures from Estes Park. Trip up to RMNP with A. I'd been wanting to try snowshoeing for a while and Deer Mt was supposed to be a gentle introduction. Turns out there wasn't enough snow for snowshoes but it was a nice easy hike. Date: Nov 13 2016
Trip up to Rocky Mountain National Park with J. We started at the Wild Basin ranger station and followed the trail to Calypso Cascades, Ouzel Falls and finally Ouzel Lake. |
