After some degree of success hiking 25 miles in one day up in glacier (for a total of 37 miles in two days) I started thinking of more long hikes I could knock out. The "Boulder Skyline Traverse" was the first that came to mind (many more in the pipeline). Main idea was to knock out all the major peaks above Boulder that are easily accessible by a trail, starting at the South Mesa Trailhead. 1) South Boulder Peak 2) Bear Peak 3) West Green Mt. 4) Flagstaff Mt. 5) Mt. Sanitas. Trip date: July 04, 2017
Accidentally started this one about a mile early at the Meyer's Homestead trailhead due to confusing signs (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). It was only supposed to be ~8 miles but turned into 10. Towards the end I got caught in a pretty exciting thunderstorm. Surprisingly, this was my first of these in Colorado in many years. On the drive back from a walk around the frozen lakes with A and dog Barry (dogs get the full name treatment) I noticed these mountains peaking out from behind some clouds. Date: Nov 24 2016
Thanksgiving morning scramble on Hillbilly Rock and the Hillbilly flatironettes. Left NCAR and worked my way up skunk canyon. I'm always impressed how much cooler it is in the canyon than the surrounding trails. Date: Nov 20 2016
Warm temperatures on Sunday caught me by surprise and mid afternoon I decided to try to get one more scramble in before the season officially came to a close. I'd been eyeing the Devils Wing's (aka Angel's wings) on the east face of Boulder mountain and decided to go for it. I hurriedly made a peanut butter sandwich, dumped a box full of clif bars in my bag, filled up on water and I was out the door. Date: Nov 12 2016
Quick trip to Eldorado Canyon for an afternoon hike with A. Unbelievably it was my first time there so I thought I'd start with a classic: Rattlesnake Gulch. The hike was nice but it was clear that climbing opportunities are the real highlight of the park. |
